Training For Doctors To Be On The Socso Panel
The Social Security Organization (SOCSO) has recently announced that all medical practitioners
who want to be on the SOCSO panel have to be trained in Occupational Health. For those with
qualifications in Occupational Health namely; the Master of Public Health (Occupational Health),
MFOM, LFOM, Post Graduate Diplomas, OHD (NIOSH) are however exempted from this training.
SOCSO has suggested a training session that may assist doctors with no occupational health
background to be accepted as their panel doctors. The Society of Occupational and Environmental
Medicine (SOEM) under MMA has been selected as one of the bodies assigned to carry out this
training programme.
The module in this training session would include the basics of occupational health as well as
pertinent topics required by a doctor examining SOCSO cases. This includes an overview of
Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Toxicology, Occupational
Epidemiology, Legislations, Risk Assessment, Prevention and Control of Hazards, Occupational
Diseases, Medical Surveillance, Personal Protective Equipment, Impairment assessment, fitness for
work, SOCSO act, benefits and the roles of the panel doctors. The topics covered in this session
will enable medical practitioners suspect and identify occupational diseases and injuries.
The course would be conducted over a weekend for 3 days (Friday-Sunday) with lectures
encompassing topics as mentioned above. There would be a final multiple choice evaluation which
will be discussed at the end of the day. The registration fee for this course has been set at RM 450
for MMA members and RM 600 for non-MMA members.
The first course has been scheduled to commence on 26th - 28th November 2010 at Grand Seasons
Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This course organized by the Society of Occupational and Environmental
Medicine, Malaysian Medical Association provides a good opportunity for the medical practitioners
to fulfill the requirement set by SOCSO, to be recognized by SOCSO panel doctors.
This
requirement was mooted by SOCSO in 2006 and a mandatory dateline, 1st January 2011, has been
set by SOCSO for all doctors to be registered as SOCSO Panel doctors.
